A BETTER AUTUMN PALETTE
Autumn Capsule Wardrobe Colours That Always Work Together
Build an autumn capsule wardrobe around chocolate brown, burgundy, cream, olive, denim and soft black with practical layering ideas.
Begin with three dependable neutrals
A useful autumn capsule usually starts with cream, chocolate brown and one deeper anchor such as black or navy. These shades can appear in trousers, knitwear, outerwear and accessories without forcing every outfit to match exactly.
Use denim as an additional neutral rather than a separate category. Blue jeans work with burgundy, camel, olive and cream, making them one of the easiest ways to connect richer autumn colours.
Add one or two seasonal colours
Burgundy adds depth without feeling loud, while olive or sage brings a softer earthy note. Butter yellow, blush pink and powder blue can also work in autumn when they are grounded by a darker coat, brown leather or a textured knit.
You do not need all of these colours. Pick the two that feel most natural beside your existing coat, shoes and everyday bag, then repeat them through smaller items such as scarves, belts and jewellery.
Make layers work together
Start with a breathable tee, shirt or fine knit, then add a cardigan, blazer or lightweight jacket. A coat becomes the final layer when temperatures drop rather than the only thing keeping the outfit warm.
Keep the longest piece purposeful. A longer coat over a neat top and wide-leg trousers creates a clean line, while a cropped cardigan helps define the waist over a flowing skirt or fuller denim.
Repeat simple outfit formulas
Try a cream knit with brown trousers and burgundy accessories; an olive jacket with blue jeans and chocolate loafers; or a burgundy sweater with cream wide-leg trousers and a camel coat. Each formula changes easily when you swap the shoes or add another layer.
The goal is not a fixed number of garments. It is a small set of shapes and colours that can be combined without starting from scratch every morning.
